Where is the Weald?

The Weald map Warren 550x314 p8and9Boundary of the Weald (heavy dashed line) and land over 200 feet (dotted line). Peter Brandon, 'Geographical and historical background', in 'Wealden Buildings', ed. John Warren, 1990, p8-9. The Weald lies south of London, between the chalk escarpments of the North Downs and the South Downs. It stretches across East Sussex and West Sussex, and into Kent, Surrey and Hampshire. It has three main areas:

  • The High Weald straddles the East Sussex - West Kent boundary
  • The Greensand Ridge runs around the north and the west
  • The Low Weald stretches in a narrow belt around the north and south of the High Weald, and in a wider belt to the west.
